The man has been identified. His name is Derek Egan, 39. The man scaled the fence of Kensington Palace before being caught in the garden on two separate days, December 21 and 23.

The backpacker is currently in custody and the royal family’s security guards have been informed of the attempted intrusion. Egan is charged with two different counts of trespassing.

The former London police chief wonders to The Sun how the backpacker was let free during the first break-in.

– Every intrusion into Kensington Palace must be carefully investigated to see if there are mental health problems and if the person in question is obsessed with royalty, he says to the magazine.

According to the British newspaper, ten members of the royal family and staff live in Kensington Palace.

William and Catherine live with their children most of the time in Windsor at Forest Lodge, but Kensington Palace is their official London base and home in the city.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were not present when the attempted break-ins took place. At the time, the family was at Anmer Hall, their private country home on the Sandringham estate.

However, a couple of days before the incidents, they were in London preparing for the royal Christmas party at Sandringham.
