The Kölner Haie celebrated their seventh win in a row at the Iserlohn Roostes and extended their lead in the DEL table.
The KEC prevailed on Tuesday evening in Sauerland with 7:4 (1:1, 4:2, 2:1) and is thus entering the new year as the clear frontrunner. The lead over the pursuers EHC Munich and Adler Mannheim grew to five points thanks to the 13th win from the last 14 games.
It was a setback for the Roosters after three wins in four games and a race to catch up in the table. The lead over the relegation zone is still a comfortable 13 points.
Eric Cornel (9th/40th), Colin Ugbekile (23rd) and Anthony Camara (60th) scored for the IEC, which took the lead twice. Moritz Müller (10th), Jan Luca Sennhenn (27th), Ryan MacInnis (33rd), Veli-Matti Vittasmäki (35th), Louis-Marc Aubry (37th), Maximilian Kammerer (42nd/46th) decided the game in favor of the Haie.
Iserlohn strong in the power play
After an open first few seconds with early finishes on both sides by Kyle Wood for Iserlohn and Kammerer as well as Nate Schnarr for Cologne, the guests from the Rhineland slowly took control of the game. The first power play of the game due to a time penalty for Cologne’s Robin van Calster went to the Roosters. And they used their superiority coldly to make it 1-0 through Cornel (9th).
The Haie’s response didn’t take long to arrive: Captain Müller scored 80 seconds later to make it 1-1. As a result, the balance of power changed several times and the first third break ended with a fair draw.
Three Haie goals in four minutes
The second period of the game began with another power play for the Roosters and they knew how to use their majority again. Ugbekile scored well from the left circle to give Iserlohn the lead again (23′). It was the first time this season that the Roosters scored two power play goals in a game.
This time too, the people of Cologne had the right answer ready. Four minutes after the Iserlohn goal, Sennhenn made it 2-2 (27th). Afterwards, both teams had an open exchange of blows with good finishes on both sides.
But it was mainly the sharks who drank the target water that evening. In the 33rd minute, MacInnis gave the visitors the lead for the first time in the game. Just 88 seconds later, Veli-Matti Vittasmäki increased the score to 4:2 (35th), and another two minutes later Aubry made it 5:2 (37th). Much to the annoyance of Daniel Fischbuch, who was brought down before the Cologne counterattack. Fischbuch put his frustration on the ice and shortly afterwards converted it into a strong assist to make it 3:5 by Cornel (40th).
Kammerer double pack to the decision
Shortly after the start of the final third, Iserlohn suffered another setback. Kammerer scored after a minute and a half to make it 6:3 and thus the preliminary decision for the Haie (42nd). A few minutes later, Kammerer scored a brace to make it 7:3 (46th). IEC coach Stefan Nyman then took a break.
A penalty against Iserlohn’s Camara gave the Haie their first majority of the game, but they couldn’t use it. As a result, the Cologne team managed their lead until Camara managed to make some cosmetic gains with Iserlohn’s fourth goal shortly before the end (60th).
Home games at the start of the year
The DEL continues on Friday with the first matchday of the new year. Then the Haie host the Straubing Tigers and Iserlohn hosts the Nuremberg Ice Tigers. All games start at 7:30 p.m.
