In Scotland, Robertson, who was born in Uddingston, near Glasgow, achieved cult status with his goal at London’s Wembley Stadium in 1981. In the international match against arch-rivals, he scored the golden goal to give the Scottish underdogs a 1-0 win in the British Home Championship, a four-nation tournament played between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“We are heartbroken to announce the death of our dear friend John Robertson. His unparalleled talent, humility and unwavering devotion to Nottingham Forest will never be forgotten,” Forest said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with John’s family, his friends and everyone who loved him. Rest in peace Robbo…our greatest.”
A statement released by his family said: “Robbo was revered by many as a football hero, but to us he was just John and Dad, the family man… kind, loving, funny, entertaining and loyal.”
Robertson, a heavy smoker, had to overcome some serious blows of fate. In addition to the premature death of his severely disabled daughter, he also had to mourn the loss of his brother Hughie. He died in a tragic car accident in 1979 – just a few days before the semi-finals of the European Cup.
Robertson is survived by his second wife Sharyl, a daughter, two sons and two grandchildren.
