Debutant Arno Merk caused a surprise at the Darts World Cup and defeated two-time world champion Peter Wright. The 33-year-old prevailed against the severely disappointing Scot at London’s Alexandra Palace on Tuesday.
The spectators at Alexandra Palace in London were amazed: Arno Merk only needed three sentences to put Scotsman Peter Wright in his place.
“Incredible, just awesome. I’m still shaking a little, my heart is still racing. I’m over the moon”said Merk after the biggest single success of his career to date at DAZN. “Sure, Peter didn’t play his best game, but I didn’t let anything go wrong.”
Wright with a weak performance
The former world champion had problems getting into the duel from the start, especially the doubles rate was extremely weak. Wright’s scoring average was just 79 points per shot.

Arno Merk, on the other hand, remained surprisingly confident. First he took advantage of Wright’s problems on the doubles fields to break quickly, then the German secured the first set with a 122 finish.
Wright, only seeded at number 30, continued to have great difficulties and swapped his darts several times during the game. But that didn’t help either. And so Merk finally won with his second match dart.

The amateur from Peine won 3-0 and was the fourth German player after Martin Schindler, Ricardo Pietreczko and Gabriel Clemens to advance to the third round, which begins on Saturday.
