This Saturday, December 20, will be etched in the memory of fans of amateur boxing and the Argentine media spectacle. Within the framework of “Párense de Manos III”, journalist Manu Jove starred in one of the most shocking moments of the night by knocking out Mariano “La Geisha” Pérez, a libertarian influencer and controversial figure on social networks, in a fight that quickly went viral.

The event was held at the Tomás Adolfo Ducó Stadium, in the City of Buenos Aires, and once again combined sport, entertainment and digital culture. Far from a traditional boxing evening, Párense de Manos brings together journalists, streamers, influencers and celebrities in fights with rules close to amateur boxing, before a massive audience that follows each match both live and through streaming platforms.

Since the previous match, the duel between Jove and Pérez had raised expectations not only because of the sporting aspect, but also because of its symbolic meaning. Manu Jove, known for his journalistic work and his critical profile on social networks, entered the ring with an orange robe, accompanied by his wife and his colleague Rebord, while “Chiquitita” by ABBA was playing, an ironic gesture that relaxed the atmosphere and anticipated that the fight would not follow the usual codes of classic boxing.

In the opposite corner, Mariano Pérez, 24 years old, arrived as a consolidated figure in the libertarian digital universe, with a provocative speech and a strong identification with the national ruling party. His presence had fueled polarization on social networks during the previous weeks, turning the fight into a crossing of political and cultural identities as well as physical ones.

The fight was brief and forceful. From the beginning, Jove came out with a flurry of blows that took Pérez against the ropes. The difference in pace, preparation and technique quickly became evident. After a series of impacts and the impossibility of an effective response, the referee decided to stop the fight by technical knockout, thus declaring one of the fastest and most talked about victories of the night.

The subsequent celebration was as atypical as the event itself. While they removed his gloves, one of Jove’s companions lit a cigarette that the journalist accepted in a gesture that was read as provocative and festive at the same time. Despite the previous tension, the finale included a hug between both competitors, which put a relaxed end to a meeting full of expectations.

After the fight, Pérez thanked the support received and recognized the effort made during his preparation, although he admitted that it was not enough to match his rival. Jove, for his part, took the microphone to joke about previous criticism, reflect on the experience and leave an ironic message: in the ring, as in public life, underestimating others can be expensive.

Beyond the sporting result, the knockout condensed in a few minutes part of the tension that runs through the Argentine media ecosystem. A cross between journalism, digital militancy and entertainment that, for one night, found its rawest expression in a ring.
