From one team to another, from the very hungry one that chased and won the second star to the one that exited after the horror penalties in the Super Cup semi-final
From Ingiocabili, an expression that deserved entry into the Treccani, to Insplicabili, an adjective that describes every metaphysical phenomenon. All in a few months and with the same voice as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, exponent of the historic core of Inter who returns disappointed by Saudi Arabia after being eliminated from the Super Cup.
SHOCK
—
How is it possible not to have beaten Bologna after having created so much, especially in the second half, without managing to score the goal that would have crushed the penalty queue? “Inexplicable” says Micki who speaks perfect Italian after six years spent between Rome and Milan and is therefore perfectly aware of the situation. Once the second star’s obsession with the twentieth scudetto was cured, Inter lost their ferocity in the details. Those who move the needle between good and bad on important days: six defeats in ninety minutes in the season are many, but the draw in Riyadh, the first after 22 games without mincing words under Chivu’s management, is a sentence because it cancels the possibility of chasing one of the four possible trophies.
BLACK AND BLUE THREAD
—
Yet the connection between the idea of being unplayable, explained by Mkhitaryan when no one imagined the collapse last spring, and the inability to understand summed up in the term “inexplicable” is much stronger than it seems. The defensive distractions (Bisseck and others) and the offensive superficiality (a problem that affects everyone, apart from Lautaro) are indicative of a dangerous gentrification of the team. It is no longer a question of presumption, perhaps, because Inter fell from the pedestal of invincibility during the Munich final. It’s about having lost personality and attention, which is costing you points and credit. But nothing is irremediable, to use another word that will perhaps enter Mkhitaryan’s lexicon: first place in Serie A and sixth in the Champions League table actually demonstrate that not everything has gone badly so far. It’s up to Chivu to prevent Inter from squandering their advantage with unsuitable attitudes.
