Former BVB striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be missing from Gabon’s national team in the first group game of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which begins at the weekend. An injury to the back of his left thigh, which the 36-year-old sustained last Sunday in Ligue 1, will initially be treated in France.
As the Gabon association announced, Aubameyang’s club Olympique Marseille wants this after the 1-0 win against AS Monaco. The attacker was substituted a few minutes before the end due to pain in his thigh. The veteran is in top form in the late autumn of his career and has contributed 18 goals in 20 appearances this season – by far the best in Europe in his age group.
The Gabon selection will face Cameroon in the first game on Christmas Eve. According to the association, depending on the healing process, it could be possible to play in the next game against Mozambique on December 28th. The last opponent in the difficult group on New Year’s Eve is the defending champion and German World Cup opponent Ivory Coast.
