Scotland’s Cameron Menzies loses his composure after a narrow defeat. He then explains his misconduct and gives private insights.

Cameron Menzies lost control of himself after his elimination from the World Darts Championship in London and injured his hand. After the narrow defeat against the Englishman Charlie Manby, Menzies banged his fist three times against his table. His water bottle and other utensils fell to the ground.

Referee Kirk Bevins admonished the darts professional and the crowd at Alexandra Palace saw him off the stage with boos. Shortly afterwards, Menzies left the arena with his arms raised and indicated his apology.

In a written statement published on Sky Sports, Menzies asked for forgiveness: “I would like to apologize. There is no excuse for this, but I haven’t had an easy time recently.” He further explained that the death of his Uncle Gary had taken a toll on him. Had he won the game against Manby, his next match would have been on the day of his uncle’s funeral. This emotional burden did not leave him unaffected, said Menzies.

Menzies had previously been annoyed with himself. With the score at 2:2 sets and 1:2 legs, Menzies miscalculated and missed the possible equalizer; a few seconds later he was eliminated. The scenes that followed the lost match will find their way into many retrospectives of this World Cup in London.
