Union Berlin’s women celebrate an extraordinary point win against Eintracht Frankfurt. The Köpenickers played harmlessly for a long time and missed two penalties, but still secured a 2-2 score in the end.

The footballers of the 1. FC Union Berlin fought for a 2-2 draw in the women’s Bundesliga against Eintracht Frankfurt in an unusual way. The Köpenick women played harmlessly for a long time on Monday evening and missed two penalties, but showed a strong fight and character. With their goals, Samantha Steuerwald and Jenny Hipp ensured that Union now have twelve points in their account after 13 match days.

The course of the game

From the start on Monday evening, Union’s women were exposed to intense pressing from Frankfurt. They tried early on to follow up their defensive pressure with a quick transition game. Omnipresent here at the beginning: Nicole Anyomi. The German international had the first chances of the game early on.

Sophie Weidauer had Union’s only chance of the first half. In the eighth minute, after a good pass from midfield, the striker only had Frankfurt goalkeeper Lina Altenburg in front of her. However, their attempt to go around it failed. Instead, the guests took the lead shortly afterwards (13th minute).

After a strong dribble on the left, Anyomi found her captain Laura Freigang at the back of the Union defense. The national striker confidently sank the ball into the right corner and prefigured a first half in which Union wobbled defensively and remained lackluster offensively.

After the break, however, it only took a good five minutes before a penalty ignited Union’s offensive threat. Eileen Campbell was hit in the penalty area after a careless Frankfurt reception error and placed the ball herself – but put it on the left post (52nd).

It took until the 71st minute for Union’s first shot on goal of the game. However, patience paid off: When a free kick cross bounced back and forth in the Frankfurt penalty area, Samantha Steuerwald reacted quickest and scored to equalize the score at 1-1. The only problem: This only lasted for a short time because Frankfurt’s Remina Chiba refined a guest counterattack with her goal four minutes later to make it 2-1.

The next and final turning point of the game came in the 89th minute when a Berlin cross was deflected by a Frankfurt hand. Jenny Hipp’s penalty was missed by Lina Altenburg, but she converted the follow-up shot. The cheering in the stadium at the Alte Försterei was huge – even when the final whistle sounded shortly afterwards.
