The German handball players won the silver medal at the World Championships – and were thrilled. This tailwind should be used. A comment.
First of all, you have to pay Germany’s handball players a big compliment. Because: They were challenged – and they delivered.
The German Handball Association had tried to organize the World Cup, which was a home World Cup up to and including the quarter-finals, with the aim of making women’s handball more visible nationwide. And even if you always try to take the pressure to achieve this goal off the team as much as possible, it was first and foremost up to the protagonists of their sport to successfully implement this goal.
There are plenty of new role models
The team managed to do that, was enthusiastic, first intoxicated themselves and then the spectators in the halls and – when the games were shown on television – captivated Germany’s sports fans.
The question that now arises: How can you use this tailwind? The German Handball Association hopes that more girls and women will find their way into the handball halls, not just as spectators, but also to try to emulate the role models – and from a German perspective there are plenty of them after these title fights.
We can only hope that the conditions are sufficient for this. In terms of area, this means: sufficient hall capacity, instructors, trainers and other important framework conditions.
Hoping for visibility and better conditions
At the top, one can hope that women’s handball will now become more visible and the Bundesliga will be more attractive with the opportunity to present itself to a broader public.
If this succeeds, the sport can take a leap forward. The World Cup showed that she is attractive. The German team has a huge part to play in this.
New idols have emerged in women’s sports in this country. Anyone who talks about handball will no longer only think of the Wolf, Köster, Golla & Co., but also of Filter, Vogel, Döll and Leuchter.
