The case of Vado, the earthquake in Totò Di Natale’s Sacatese, the Amelia paradox: the strange exemptions in the most important Italian amateur tournament

Winning is no longer enough. At least in Serie D, being first in the standings no longer guarantees a coach the security of remaining sitting on the bench. Exemption is always around the corner. It is truly curious what happened in the last two days, which saw the termination of the relationship with three technicians from three top teams.

I’ll go and have fun

One was Vado, at the top of group A with a one-point advantage over Ligorna with two rounds remaining in the first round. The draw on the pitch of third-last Cairese in the standings cost Giorgio Roselli his place (Marco Sesia in his place) despite the fact that in these 15 days Vado has always been in command, reaching a peak of 5 points ahead of the second (on that occasion Chisola) on the ninth day. The same fate, in what was undoubtedly the most sensational case, had befallen Gianluca Esposito the week before, coach of Scafatese, group G leaders (Giovanni Ferraro in his place) after the draw in Olbia. The decision, which led to the resignation of team manager Totò di Natale, was taken despite the queen’s scepter won on the fifth day, the unbeaten record and a 4-point gap accumulated over the Trastevere-Nocerina pair.

bitter amelia

The third “illustrious dismissal” occurred in Fasano, in group H, where after the defeat in Martina Franca Luigi Agnelli was missing (in his place Pasquale Padalino) with the second team three points behind Paganese but after a tournament they were in command for 13 out of 15 days. All this without forgetting the equally singular dismissal – even if in this case the ranking must be seen… in reverse – of Marco Amelia from the Sondrio bench. After gaining just one point in ten matchdays, the former world champion was relieved of his duties after obtaining his first victory, at the expense of the Milan Futuro of the other former world champion Massimo Oddo. Yep, in Serie D winning is no longer enough for a coach.
