Speed skating teenager Finn Sonnekalb narrowly missed the next podium place at the World Cup in Hamar, Norway. The 18-year-old came fourth in the 1,500 meters in 1:45.51 minutes. US miracle runner Jordan Stolz won the race (1:44.16 minutes).
Sonnekalb has caused quite a stir so far this season. The Erfurt native has already landed on the podium three times – he came second twice and third once. The whiz kid still has a chance in Hamar: the 1,000 meters are on the program on Saturday.
Sonnekalb is the German speed skating and short track community’s best hope for the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in February.
Sophie Warmuth achieved her best individual World Cup result in the 500 meters in Hamar. The 23-year-old also came fourth in 37.80 seconds with the victory of the outstanding Dutchwoman Femke Kok (37.05 seconds).
