Archaeologists are currently conducting extensive research in Lombardsijdelaan, which has been closed for infrastructure works for some time. The Roads and Traffic Agency will soon renovate the village passage, but before the works above ground start, the subsurface will first be examined.
The excavations are taking place next to the Church of Our Lady Visitation, where there was a larger cemetery in earlier centuries. “We are excavating an older phase of the cemetery,” says archaeologist Jelle Defrancq of Group Monument. “For the time being, about fifty skeletons are emerging, but we expect at least a hundred to a hundred and fifty more, if the preservation remains as good as it is now.”
