Darts star Michael van Gerwen has overcome his two-year low form and is now in top form again on the PDC tour. Last weekend the Dutchman celebrated his next tournament victory in Niedernhausen. The third in the world rankings was visibly displeased that many of his colleagues were missing.
Michael van Gerwen is the man of the hour in the darts scene. The 32-year-old is not only leading the Premier League at the moment, but is also on the rise in other areas.
Last Sunday, van Gerwen celebrated victory in the eighth Players Championship tournament of the year. MvG defeated the German darts professional Martin Schindler 8:4 in the final.
But many top players decided not to take part in Niedernhausen beforehand. With van Gerwen, James Wade and Gerwyn Price only three of the eight Premier League starters were involved. Gary Anderson, Michael Smith, Joe Cullen, Jonny Clayton and Peter Wright, on the other hand, took a break.
A circumstance that van Gerwen could not understand. “Gerwyn Price is here, James Wade too, and there were some other top players. But the players who were absent obviously didn’t think it was worth going abroad for that. They’re a bit lazy,” said the three-time world champion “live dartsquoted.
“The last year was obviously a disaster for me”
Meanwhile, recent successes have given van Gerwen new self-confidence. “But I’m still the favorite in the bookies. People have their own opinions but if I keep playing my game it’s still hard to beat me and they all know it. They don’t admit it, but so life is.”
In January 2021, “Mighty Mike” fell from the top of the world rankings after around seven years. “Last year was obviously a disaster for me. If you look at the ranking system I’ve lost £200,000 because of Covid and there’s nothing you can do about that. Also, several European Tours have been cancelled, so I’m not defending that money either was able to,” summed up van Gerwen, who is now looking ahead again.
