Dominik Kohr sets a new record for sending offs in the Bundesliga. After the game against Hoffenheim, a Mainz teammate commented on the foul in question.
After his sending off against Hoffenheim, Dominik Kohr’s team rallied behind the midfielder. “The hit is without question very bad. I know Dome, he’s a good person,” said goalscorer Danny da Costa on Friday after FSV Mainz 05’s 1-1 (0-1) draw against TSG Hoffenheim.
Kohr was shown the red card in the 88th minute after a serious foul on Max Moerstedt and video evidence. It was his ninth dismissal in the Bundesliga – more than any other player. The 31-year-old had previously seen yellow-red six times and straight red three times.
“He tries to block the pass with the long step and comes too late at that moment. I’m glad that the opponent wasn’t injured,” said da Costa. Kohr’s actions were never intentional: “It wasn’t his first expulsion. But there was nothing that happened with malicious intent.”
The topic also concerns the team internally, says da Costa: “You keep reading all the articles and reports that he’s the bully of the league. I’ve played with him long enough and know that they don’t do him full justice.”
Sports director Niko Bungert emphasized: Kohr is “not someone who does something like that on purpose. He plays hard and sometimes situations like this can arise.”
