British bassist Mani has died aged 63. The musician, who made music history with the Stone Roses and later also played with Primal Scream, announced a UK-wide “In Conversation” tour just a few days ago.
His brother Greg confirmed the death with a statement on social media. “WITH THE HEAVIEST HEART I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD DEATH OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD,” he wrote on social media, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. RIP RKID.”, it says.
Mani: Questions about the cause of death
There is currently no official information about the cause of death. Neither the family nor his management have released details or background information. The tabloid The Sun, citing unnamed sources, reported that Mani suffered a seizure at home. However, this has not been officially confirmed.
The death also comes as a surprise because the musician had recently been publicly active and had announced new dates for a speaking tour. In 2023, Mani’s wife Imelda died. She left him with their twin sons.
Mani: Looking at his life
Mani, real name Gary “Mani” Mounfield, was born on November 16, 1962 in Crumpsall, Manchester. He joined The Stone Roses in 1987 and played on both of the band’s studio albums before they disbanded in 1996. In the same year he moved to Primal Scream, where he remained active until 2011. He returned to the band with the reunion of the Stone Roses and was part of the line-up until they disbanded again in 2017.
