Beune competed against compatriot Marijke Groenewoud in the penultimate stage. She immediately distanced herself from Groenewoud in the first laps and also fell well below the best time of Francesca Lollobrigida from Italy of 3.57.65. Beune remained one and a half seconds above the world record of Martina Sablikova (3.52.02) and less than one second above the Dutch record of Irene Schouten.
Bente Kerkhoff drove 3.59.37 and finished seventh. Groenewoud finished twelfth with 4:01.56. Elisa Dul achieved 4.03.61, good for fourteenth place.
Beune had been looking forward to the start of the Olympic season for months, but once the time came, her National Distance Championships were forced to be canceled after one day. The flu struck mercilessly, but the multiple world champion subsequently recovered and traveled to Salt Lake City for the first World Cup of the year. The 26-year-old skater from IKO-X2O was eager to take revenge. “A pointer always causes hassle,” she told De Telegraaf.
