In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the northern lights could be seen above the Wadden Sea. The natural phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun hit the Earth’s magnetic field and collide with the atmosphere, revealing colorful veils of light. According to meteorologists, this was the last time for the time being that the Northern Lights appeared so clearly above the Netherlands. Due to decreasing solar activity, such strong solar flares will occur less often. Especially in the north of the country, where the sky is darker, many people enjoyed the rare, almost magical spectacle. The aurora borealis can usually be seen near the Arctic Circle, for example in Scandinavia.
