Because a lot of new energy needs to be generated in the Netherlands, ‘ten more Moerdijks are needed’. This was stated by councilor Danny Dingemans on Wednesday evening during the second information meeting about the disappearance of the village. The councilor said this after a commenter wondered why the newly generated energy must come from the Moerdijk area. “We are all victims here,” said the speaker.

On Wednesday evening there was a second information meeting in the town hall about the disappearance of the village of Moerdijk. This was intended for residents from the surrounding villages around Moerdijk, such as Zevenbergen and Zevenbergschen Hoek. There, councilor Danny Dingemans and mayor Aart-Jan Moerkerke again answered questions from residents.

“This remains a direction that brings enormous emotions,” Moerkerke addressed the audience. “There are people here in the room who are affected by what we said today.”

A number of residents were shocked on Tuesday evening when the board of the municipality of Moerdijk announced that as far as they were concerned the village would disappear. It must make way for expansion of an existing port and industrial estate.

The expansion needed is enormous. The port and industrial estate will expand and three new energy stations will be built to continue to provide everyone with electricity in the future. Other projects, such as high-voltage lines and a transformer station, must be built around the energy stations. A total of 450 hectares of land, approximately 630 football fields, is needed for the plans.

The Moerdijk city council will discuss the plans on Thursday evening. The council will make a decision on November 19.
