Northern Lights, a colorful light phenomenon in the dark sky, are caused by the sun. “In recent days, our Earth has been in the crosshairs of a very active solar region, which produced several solar flares of the highest category,” says Elke D’Huys of the Belgian space weather center STCE. Such solar flares send charged particles from the sun to Earth, which then provide pink, green, purple or white light in the sky.
These charged particles in turn caused very strong disturbances of the magnetic field. The Belgian magnetometers in Dourbes and Manhay recorded values that indicate that visible northern lights are possible.
