Ice hockey star Alexander Ovechkin scored the 900th goal in the NHL in his Washington Capitals’ game against St. Louis. The Russian is the first player in NHL history to reach this mark. The puck from his historic goal ended up with him in a detour.
It was a historic moment in the North American professional ice hockey league NHL, and Jordan Binnington, the goalie for the St. Louis Blues, was apparently also aware of this. Binnington conceded the goal to make it 0-2 after two and a half minutes in the second period in the game against the Washington Capitals.
Ovechkin with 900th goal – the first player in the NHL
The goal scorer was once again Alexander Ovetschkin, who was enthusiastically celebrated by his teammates and the fans in the home arena: Because it was the 900th goal in the NHL, a mark that the NHL’s record goalscorer was the first player to reach.
And Blues goalie Binnington apparently spontaneously had the idea of securing the puck as a historical souvenir. Nice try, as they say in the USA: Because of course the TV cameras captured exactly how Binnington fished the puck out of the goal, quickly took off his glove and tried to hide the disc in his pants.
After a short discussion, one of the linesmen, Michel Cormier, was finally able to convince Binnington to release the puck, which ended up going to Ovechkin. The 40-year-old Russian proudly showed it to the cameras after the game, which ended with his Capitals winning 6-1
Ovechkin celebrates with family and fans: “A huge number”
“It’s a huge number, no one has ever done it in the history of the NHL, and being first is a special moment.”said Ovechkin. “It’s nice to have done it at home, in front of our fans. My family could be here. That’s pretty cool.”
He has already been the winningest striker in NHL history since last season, when he overtook Wayne Gretzky, whose record of 894 goals stood for 30 years. The Muscovite has been repeatedly criticized in the past for his lack of distance from Russian President Vladimir Putin, even after the start of the war of aggression against Ukraine.
