Paul McCartney tells in his news book Wings: The story of a band on the run about a rumor that circulated about him in the 70s and which some people still believe.
McCartney recalls how shortly before the Beatles broke up, in the fall of 1969, a rumor began to circulate that he had died and had been replaced by a doppelgänger. The most common claim was that McCartney had died in a car accident as early as 1966.
McCartney says in his book that the rumor is partly true.
– In many ways I was dead. I was 27 years old, a former member of the Beatles, and a failure at many things. These failures took all my energy, so I had to change my life.
McCartney moved out of London to a remote sheep farm in Scotland with his family.
The Beatles broke up in 1970.
Some still believe that McCartney died in 1966, and there would be several clues to this. With 1969’s Abbey Road, McCartney is barefoot and that would mean he’s dead.
The other members of the Beatles symbolize the funeral procession, according to those who believe the rumor.
In the background you can see a bubble bond whose registration number is 28IF. This is said to mean that McCartney would be 28 years old if he lived.
Wings: The story of a band on the run is a book published on November 4, which, among other things The Guardian has quoted. It tells the story of McCartney’s second band, Wings.
