Patrick’s name can also be read several times on the viaduct over the Stationsweg, at the entrance to IJmuiden. At that location, the names of IJmuiden residents can often be read on banners, as a tribute, congratulations, or in this case condolence.
It is striking that Patrick’s name is on a row of Dutch flags. In recent weeks, many Dutch flags have been removed by the municipality, but now Velsen says he is making an exception.
“Because the current Dutch flags were hung on the viaduct to commemorate Patrick, we are leaving the flags hanging in this case out of respect for the victim and the relatives,” a spokesperson said.
For the time being, they will remain up for a while, she says: “We are consulting with the victim’s family to remove the flags at an appropriate time.”
