When it comes to the scoring threat of young players, the Bundesliga is currently providing an excellent picture. The statistics of the best scorers up to the age of 21 are dominated by youngsters who are under contract with German clubs. At the top is a man from Frankfurt, who is likely to give up his place in the sun soon.
The 19-year-old Can Uzun has already contributed five goals and three assists in Eintracht’s Bundesliga season, as well as a goal in the Champions League and an assist in the DFB Cup. With these ten scorer points from 14 games, the young Turk leads the ranking of top scorers up to the age of 21 at clubs from the top 5 leagues. But he is there on call.
Lurking behind Uzun is Barcelona’s top talent Lamine Yamal (18), who not only has a better scoring rate per game than the Frankfurt player, but can also easily target Uzun’s ranking because the Regensburg native will be out for a longer period of time due to a muscle injury. The Spaniard, on the other hand, is back in the flow after recovering from groin problems. Lamine Yamal generated nine scorer points from nine games in LaLiga and the premier class; four goals, five assists. On Wednesday he could further expand his tally during Barça’s visit to Bruges (9 p.m.). Uzun also has a Leverkusen player breathing down his neck.
The Bundesliga’s standing in the scorer rankings for players up to the age of 21 is remarkable. Nine players from Germany’s elite league are in the top 20. After Uzun in the top 5 follows Bayer’s Schick representative Christian Kofane (19), who collected four goals and four assists for the Werkself and in the international ranking, alongside Uzun and Lamine Yamal, only the 20-year-old Real professional Arda Güler (14 games, 9 scorers) – one of three Turks in the top 10 – and Comos 21-year-old midfield talent Nico Paz (11 games, 8 scorers) is ahead of him.
Best scorers up to 21 years old: Two from Leipzig and one from Bremen in the top 20
Also coming up are Cologne high-flyer Said El Mala (19) and Leipzig discovery Yan Diomande (18). Both collected the majority of their six goal participations in October and November. Youngsters Ilyas Ansah (20), Samuel Mbangula (21), Bazoumana Touré (19), Assan Ouédraogo (19) and Ernest Poku (21) also have five scorer points each at Union Berlin, Werder Bremen, TSG Hoffenheim, Leipzig and Leverkusen. The latter has already scored eight goals in the current season, three of which were not at Bayer 04, but in Alkmaar.
On Wednesday in the Champions League, Frankfurt’s top scorer Uzun could not improve, but Jean-Mattéo Bahoya (20) could improve. So far, the winger has been involved in four goals. The SGE has to play against SSC Napoli at 6:45 p.m. The best scorer under the age of 21 at FC Bayern, who has to play at PSG in Paris from 9 p.m., is currently Lennart Karl (17) with three points in all competitions.
