The US wants to scale down its military presence on Europe’s eastern flank, including at an important air base in southeastern Romania. The number of troops there is being reduced, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reports. About a thousand American soldiers remain stationed at the base. In June 2024, there were approximately 1,800, according to US government sources.
