Own security service for Berlin residential area

For almost a year now, the residents of the high-rise settlement Heerstraße Nord in western Berlin have been living in nightly fear. The sinister arsonist von Staaken is responsible for more than a hundred arson attacks with numerous injuries.

The security service of the state-owned housing association Gewobag has been patrolling the high-rise settlement since Friday. Can a security service finally stop the series of fires in the Berlin residential area?

Petra Winter (68), tenant group spokeswoman for Gewobag, is relieved that a security service is now on the move in the neighborhood: “Gewobag has hung appropriate notices on the stairways. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t read them at all.”

► So far, the area around the Blasewitzer Ring, the Magistratsweg, one side of the Maulbeerallee and the Obstallee would be monitored by the security guards between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

However, according to winter only every second hour. In between, people could stay in a former laundry room. “Bad guys would just have to wait until they’re gone,” fears Winter.

Although the police caught a suspect (16) in the act in January, the fire terror did not stop.
