Róisín Murphy is causing uproar again: After a deleted X-post, she describes transsexuality as “insane” and calls for a review of “trans ideology”.

In the summer of 2023, Róisín Murphy found herself in the first shitstorm when Facebook comments she had previously written were unearthed, full of critical statements regarding puberty blockers. Public scrutiny has only increased since she recently spoke out about transgender issues again in a now-removed post on X. Now there are new developments on the topic – especially because the musician herself spoke out again.

This is what happened: Deleted post causes uproar

On October 21st, the singer once again intervened in the discourse about transsexuality. Murphy shared a graphic from Tufts University’s Cooperative Election Study on X. According to these statistics, the proportion of 18 to 22 year olds who identify as trans or non-binary has fallen sharply in recent years. Murphy wrote: “This was never real. However, it is terribly sad. It has caused absolute chaos for children, families and society.” The posting and quote can now only be found as secondary sources – Róisín Murphy deleted the X post.

Your fans are more than disappointed. In the eyes of the public, Murphy not only defends the rigid dogma of binary gender norms, but also masks her comments, which are read as transphobic, as a “dissenting opinion.” When a user commented that hate speech and right-wing politics would naturally discourage people from being openly trans, Murphy countered in the comments section: “I think you mean when different opinions are heard.”

As Róisín Murphy continues to deal on X

The singer made another post on October 23rd on “The more I see of this cruel ‘activism,’ the more convinced I am that I don’t want her near me or near my music, no matter what impact it may have on my career.”

She would position herself as the principled antithesis of AI pop stars and holograms who “infantilize and exploit” audiences, and Róisín Murphy described her critics as “babies” who “need to grow up and allow artists like me the dignity of opinion and the space and freedom to create.”

Regarding the deleted data post, she wrote: “My statement ‘it was never real’ refers to the contagion, which was undoubtedly encouraged by the subjugation of the media, the capture of medical institutions and the confusion on social media.”

Róisín Murphy: Not transphobic, but critical?

In her opinion, her formulations and public attitude towards trans people are not transphobic, but rather critical of the “willfully blind and irresponsible behavior” on the part of those who identify as trans or speak and report about it. In this regard, Murphy has joined those calling for “a long-overdue review of the trans ideology that continues to trample on anyone who denounces its negative consequences.”

She also emphasized that she feels no hatred toward transsexuals and does not deny their existence, but later wrote in the same paragraph: “Children, families, women and homosexuals have all been negatively influenced by the insane belief that one can change one’s gender.” She did not deny the existence of transsexuals, but described them as “insane”. She herself calls her sentences “critical classifications”.
