SC Magdeburg didn’t let their victory be taken away from them in the sixth game of the Champions League. The SCM celebrated their third success within five days against Eurofarm Pelister.
In front of over 6,000 fans at home, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team achieved an easy victory against the North Macedonian champions. Magdeburg won against the team from Bitola with 36:26 (19:13).
“We have to lead higher”
Despite the third game in five days, there was no sign of fatigue at the SCM. In their usual manner, the Elbestadt team rolled on the attack and created top-class finishing situations. Elvar Örn Jonsson took the first three-goal lead (6:3) in the eighth minute. But the guest from North Macedonia could not be shaken off. In particular, Filip Kuzmanovski, who once worked for Magdeburg, was motivated and kept Pelister in the game.
Bennet Wiegert was able to celebrate again with the SCM.
Only a series of penalties broke the visitors’ game. Tim Hornke put it on plus-four (17th) and it looked as if the SCM would pull away. But the home team missed a few chances, Bennet Wiegert took a time out (27th) and encouraged his team: “We have to lead higher!”. His boys delivered quickly, increased the lead even further and, thanks to a goal by Felix Claar, went into the dressing room with a six-goal lead almost before the siren.
Magnusson with perfect efficiency
After the break, the SCM seemed unfocused for a moment and needed a little time to convert their superiority into goals. But supported by the outstanding Omar Ingi Magnusson – the Icelander scored ten goals from ten attempts – the defending champion pulled away. Sebastian Barthold put the home team ahead with ten goals in the 52nd minute. Pelister gave young players the chance to gain experience against the top German team. And the HBL runner-up didn’t let up, defending their comfortable lead – also thanks to 15 saves from keeper Sergey Hernandez.
The league game in Hanover is on Sunday (4:30 p.m. live in the ticker) before the international break. In Group B of the premier class, Magdeburg is now four points ahead of third place after six of 14 games – direct entry into the quarter-finals awaits the Saxony-Anhalts.
