Mikaela Shiffrin and her fiancé Alexander Aamodt Kilde love the challenge on the slopes. The American has mixed feelings about the Norwegian’s comeback.
The season for female ski racers in Sölden starts on Saturday. World Cup record holder Mikaela Shiffrin will also be at the start. The American is privately engaged to ski racer Alexander Aamodt Kilde, who had a serious fall in Wengen in January last year and has since undergone several operations. However, the Norwegian wants to make his comeback on Sunday – a roller coaster ride of emotions for Shiffrin.
She said on Servus TV: “When I think about it, I usually start to cry. Basically from joy, but it also scares me a little. There are a lot of feelings involved.”
Shiffrin herself also had to struggle with the consequences of a fall last year – especially psychologically. In Killington, during the giant slalom, a pole impaled itself in her abdomen. As a result, the Olympic champion struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder.
“Sharing, speaking and connecting with others […] helped me incredibly to look forward again after traumatic experiences,” she said at the Atomic Media Day, at which “Oe24” was present.
Next season the Winter Olympics will also take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. In 2014 and 2018, Mikaela Shiffrin secured gold in the slalom and giant slalom. At the 2022 Beijing Games, Shiffrin was unable to win a medal and appeared uncertain.
That’s why she now said: “Winning a medal is always something very special. Life goes on, no matter what the outcome. I don’t know if it will be my last Olympic Games. I think so, but at the moment I can’t confirm that. You never know.”
