RRome, 21 Oct. (askanews) – Michel Franco’s new film “Dreams”, presented at the Rome Film Festival, tells a love story that is also a power struggle between an illegal Mexican immigrant and a rich American philanthropist played by Jessica Chastain. He is a talented dancer played by Isaac Hernandez who dreams of a new life in the United States. She belongs to American high society, supports and encourages him, until this relationship alters his perfect world.

The Mexican director shot “Dreams” two years ago, when the “hunt” for illegal immigrants was already intense in the USA. Today, with the Trump presidency, the film has become even more relevant, and the director explained: “Since I was a child I have seen my fellow countrymen crossing the border, risking their lives. The problem is that today hatred against immigrants has become clear. This is extremely dangerous, and there is a problem of growing racism. Unfortunately, Mexico is a country from which people still flee, because it is corrupt, dominated by cartels drugs, and there are many people who have no choice if they want to survive: they have to leave.”

In rich, progressive, enlightened San Francisco, the protagonist’s philanthropic actions seem like a drop in a sea of social and economic disparity. And perhaps they are just facade actions. “She is convinced that money can buy a better conscience and decide what is best for others. Obviously you don’t know what is best for a person who comes from another world, from another country, and I think this can be a very dangerous aspect of wealth.”
