A combined Olympic medalist who has since moved into the business world Sampa Lajunen the fund Samla Hotels ky has filed for bankruptcy.
Samla Capital announced the matter on Tuesday. The bankruptcy application has been filed in the District Court of Central Finland on the same day.
Samla Hotels ky previously owned the luxury hotel The Hotel Maria, which was completed in Helsinki. According to the release, the fund’s debts are 31 million euros.
The fund is unable to meet its debts because it has no significant assets and no income. The fund has assets of around 16,000 euros.
– The debts have been formed from the costs arising from the development, construction and start-up of The Hotel Maria in Helsinki, which were clearly higher than anticipated. The simultaneous realization of several market and cost risks decisively complicated the start of operations, the press release said.
Lajunen manages the Samla Capital investment company, whose funds include Samla Asunnot, Samla Toimitilat, Samla Toimitilat II and Samla Hotels.
The largest creditors of the hotel fund are Samla Asunnot ky and Samla Toimitilat II ky, whose receivables total approximately EUR 27 million.
The Hotel Maria, located in Kruununhaa, opened quickly in 2023. The hotel, which quickly fell into financial difficulties, was sold last summer and changed its name to Waldorf Astoria Helsinki.
