Sabrina Carpenter has mocked the controversy surrounding the cover of her new LP Man’s Best Friend and hit back in her monologue “Saturday Night Live” against her reputation as a “sex-obsessed pop star.”
“The last time I was here, for the 50th anniversary, I got to sing with Paul Simon, and since then my new album ‘Man’s Best Friend’ has been released,” Carpenter said. “Some people were a little shocked by the cover. I’m not sure why. It just is.”
Carpenter then showed off the controversial cover: “Me on all fours with an invisible person pulling my hair. But what people don’t realize is how it was cropped. If you zoom out, you can clearly see that it’s a picture of me at Bowen’s 50th anniversary [Yang] is the one who helps me up by my hair.”
Carpenter further zoomed in on the unedited photo: “After Martin Short pushed me out of the buffet line and said something like, ‘Daddy needs his mini quiche.'”
Sabrina Carpenter doesn’t want to be misunderstood
“Since I’m here, I want to clear up some misconceptions people have about me,” Carpenter added. “Everyone thinks I’m a horny pop star, but I really have so much more to offer. I’m not just horny… I’m aroused too. And I’m raunchy. And I love reading. My favorite books are encyclopedias, they’re so big and hard, and okay, I try to be serious, I’m sorry.”
Before heading into the audience, Carpenter told those watching at home, “Under all the glitter, the wigs and the corsets, there’s a real human being.”
Carpenter was both host and musical guest on the latest episode of SNL, appearing in skits throughout the show, in addition to her performances of “Manchild” and “Nobody’s Son.”
