A serious motorcycle accident ended the life of Jesús Montero. The former baseball player died as a result of his injuries – at just 35 years old.
Former top baseball talent Jesús Montero has died after a traffic accident. The 35-year-old, who was brought into the US professional league Major League Baseball (MLB) by the New York Yankees in 2011, succumbed to his serious injuries in his home country of Venezuela, the Yankees said. Montero had collided with a truck on his motorcycle and never woke up from his coma.
“The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jesús Montero. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones,” the New York team said in a statement.
At the beginning of the 2010s, Montero was considered one of the greatest talents in US baseball. In 2011, MLB Pipeline ranked him as the Yankees’ best prospect and ninth-best in the entire league system. After strong performances in the Yankees’ Triple-A team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he was given the opportunity in the MLB in September 2011 – and used it impressively: with a batting average of .328, an on-base percentage of .406 and a slugging rate of .590, the then 21-year-old made people sit up and take notice.
But after injuries and a doping ban, his career got derailed. He changed employers several times, but never made it back to the biggest stage in his sport. In total, he played 226 games in the MLB over five seasons, most recently playing in Venezuela.
