Alphonso Davies’ recovery from his cruciate ligament tear is going faster than expected. He could return before the new year.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany is confident that Alphonso Davies could be back on the pitch for FC Bayern Munich this year. The 24-year-old Canadian seriously injured his right knee and tore a cruciate ligament during an international match in March. Now he’s starting his first units again – initially individually, but the goal is clear: a deployment before the turn of the year.
Before the Bundesliga duel with Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 6:30 p.m.), Kompany was surprisingly positive about the development: “It’s definitely looking good,” said the Belgian and added: “I was initially hoping that he would be back at the beginning of January, but as it looks now, it might happen a little earlier. If he can play a few more games in December, then everyone has worked wonderfully.”
After months of rehab, we now have to carefully look at how Davies’ body reacts to the increased training load. “If things continue to go well, then we might have a very, very fit Alphonso Davies back sometime in December,” said Kompany.
The list of absences for the record champions remains long: In addition to Davies, Hiroki Itō, who suffered a metatarsal fracture, and Josip Stanišić, who is suffering from a partial injury to the medial ligament, are also missing. The latter will “still be missing” in the upcoming game, explained the coach. A deployment for Itō is only conceivable from November at the earliest.
One candidate for returning to the squad, however, is Raphaël Guerreiro. The Portuguese left-back recently suffered a blow in the away game at Eintracht Frankfurt. If the final training goes without any problems, he could be available against BVB, said Kompany.
