President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered the deployment of 10,000 troops to assist in the rescue operations. The states of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosí and Querétaro are the hardest hit. At least 34,000 houses were damaged. Schools, hospitals, roads and bridges have also been damaged and tens of thousands of households are without power.

In the town of Xicotepec in the state of Puebla, residents were also warned of another danger: the flooding of the San Marcos River caused the cage of a Bengal tiger in the local zoo to collapse. The animal then fled, but was captured a few hours later.

The Mexican weather institute also predicts a lot of rain for the coming days. Mexico has been hit by particularly heavy rainfall since the beginning of the year, with record amounts of rainfall in the capital Mexico City.
