DOW JONES–The Volkswagen Group sold almost 2.2 million vehicles worldwide in the third quarter, almost as many as in the second quarter and 1 percent more than in the same period last year. Growth was again driven primarily by markets such as Central and Eastern Europe and South America. In contrast, sales in the most important market, China, fell by more than 7 percent between July and September.
By type of drive, fully electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to rise significantly, with sales increasing by a third compared to the previous year to 252,100 units.
At the core brand VW Passenger Cars, sales in the quarter across all drive types were 1.17 million vehicles, just below the previous year’s figure of around 1.18 million units, as the car manufacturer announced. The brand Skoda However, it achieved another jump with a strong increase of 15.1 percent. VW commercial vehicles also increased by 10 percent. The premium car brand Audi recorded a decline of 2.6 percent, while sales at Porsche fell by 5.7 percent.
By region, Volkswagen Group sales fell again in North America in the quarter: the decline was 9.8 percent. In smaller markets such as Central and Eastern Europe (+13.7%) or South America (+9.7%), there was a significant increase. In Western Europe, sales are also 8 percent higher than in the same period last year.
