Storm Amy is fourth Storm of the Year in the Netherlands

In IJmuiden, the Saturday afternoon blew on average with wind force 9 for an hour, which makes this year’s fourth storm a fact. At 108 kilometers per hour, the heaviest gust of wind has been measured so far in the North Holland site. The storm, which originated from the remains of Hurricane Humberto, was named Amy from the British weather service.

The storm is the second of the meteorological autumn, the first was measured on 15 September in IJmuiden. Here and there, Amy caused problems on Saturday. For example, in Noord-Brabant, trees blew on the road and a few ferry services to the Wadden Islands were canceled. In Stadskanaal a fall wind caused considerable damage. Outdoor activities were also canceled in several provinces.

During the annual Eurobirdwatch, many more seabirds were seen by the Hard Westenwind than usual, reports Vogelbescherming Nederland. “Birds such as the gray arrow storm bird, Kleine Jager and Jan-Van-Gent normally live far at sea and now travel south across the North Sea.” For the birders who participated in the count, that yielded “spectacular observations”.

Rijkswaterstaat will close the Hollandsche IJsselkering at Capelle aan den IJssel on Saturday evening and the Haringvlietsluizen near Stellendam because of the predicted high water levels. “The chance of a storm or high water is greater in the coming months and we will be extra alert on that.” Between Hoek van Holland and Den Helder, the chance of “nuisance for activities in the outside dike coastal areas, such as beach pavilions” is greatest. People must also take high water into account on the east side of the IJssel and Markermeer.
