Eight races can still be ran in the 2025 Formula season, but at the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, Oscar Piatri and Lando Norris can write history for their racing team and give McLaren the earliest designer of all time.

The first World Cup title of the 2025 Formula 1 season could be awarded in Baku on Sunday. McLaren is about to win the trophy and thus the successful title defense. Whether this succeeds depends primarily on Oscar Piatri and Lando Norris.

The simplest title calculation looks like this: If the McLaren duo gets a double victory (as in seven races this year), the champagne can be opened.

With 43 points, McLaren would increase its points account to 660. According to Baku, 346 points are still to be awarded. With these 346 points, however, Ferrari can reach a maximum of 653 points- and only if the red seven double wins get in the main and three double victories in the sprint races, while the McLaren drivers do not score in any races.

McLaren does not have to win for the World Cup title

Another invoice: Even if McLaren should not win in Baku, you can celebrate if Ferrari is not at least nine, Mercedes at least elf and Red Bull no longer scored at least 32 points.

The McLaren celebration must be postponed if Ferrari celebrates a double or “simple” victory.

While the Scuderia could still prevent the World Cup decision, it looks much more complicated for Mercedes. If one assumes that both McLaren end up in the points, the silver arrows in Baku would have to win. The team would also have to be at least fourth if McLaren does not score, or with both cars at least sixth and seventh to stay in the title by Singapore.

If a McLaren win in Azerbaijan, Mercedes is in any case out of the title race.

Red Bull has the smallest of all chances

Shortly before impossible, the title chances of Red Bull. Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda have to get at least 33 points together and hope for a double-nuller from McLaren drivers so that they stay in the race. If McLaren gets at least eleven points, it was for the bulls regardless of their own result.

For McLaren, not only the title is at stake, but also two Formula 1 records are in danger. If the team gets the title, it would be the earliest ever. The record is currently holding Red Bull, which in 2023 became six races in front of the end world champion.

In addition, McLaren can also break the score of 860. Even 1000 points would be possible on paper, but there would be a double victory in each of the last races.
