Defending champion SC Magdeburg won the new edition of the Champions League semi-final. At FC Barcelona, the Elbestädter prevailed in front of 1,832 spectators with 22:21 (15:12). Omar Ingi Magnusson was the best thrower with six goals, keeper Sergey Hernandez convinced with 15 parades. It was also the first victory of the Magdeburgers in Barcelona.
Zechel and Berglahl replace injured suction strup
SCM trainer Bennet Wiegert trusted on the district on Oscar Bergendahl and Tim Zechel, who replaced the missing Magnus Saugstrup. Both teams had an intensive defense duel in which Magdeburg mostly presented and quickly countered Barcelona. Thanks to the mistakes of the Catalans in the attack, the SCM expanded its lead over three goals (16./9:6). Defensively, Barça adjusted to the Elbe residents better, but the home side could not shorten until the break.
Defense rows dominate both halves
Even after the break, the hosts did not compensate for, although Magdeburg awarded four attacks in a row due to simple mistakes-but Sergey Hernandez in the goal and the SCM defense held up (16: 14/37.). In the position attack, the SCM struggled and got into the time game several times, but remained in the lead throughout thanks to the stable defensive – also because the host always made simple mistakes. In the middle of the second round, the game was drawn by many fouls and interruptions, both teams were noticeable.
When Barcelona came to 21:21 equalization shortly before the end (56th), there was a lot to be said for the home side. But Magdeburg saved the narrow lead over time: Barcelonas Ian Barrufet put the last seven meters after the final whistle on the post – although Hernandez was probably still on the ball with his fingertips.
