TV critic Victor Vlam can well imagine that the pan in the flame hits RTL Tonight, where the many experts and presenters tumble over each other. “Quarrel Humberto and Renze?”

A whole group of experts, but only limited space at the Desk: according to TV critic Victor Vlam, the format of RTL Tonight guarantees internal quarrels. “The number now comes to no fewer than 18 permanent clients. There are many. There are also two reporters, a voice-over and four presenters,” he says in Victor explains TV.

Crooked eyes

It will be fervently behind the scenes, Victor expects. “I will already make a prediction: I think there will be a fight. All those permanent clients are also each other’s competitors. Every day they compete for the limited places on the desk. Every day there will be people who think they really have to know for sure.”

However, they are not allowed because colleagues have been chosen. “Well, if that happens once, then you still accept it. The second time too. But if that happens the third time and the fourth time again, yes, it can lead to crooked eyes. What makes the problem at RTL Tonight bigger than with other talk shows, is the exclusivity.”

Exclusivity

Normally you can go to another talk show if you are not asked, Victor explains. “If, for example, Twan Huys is not at RTL Tonight because Michiel Vos is there that evening to talk about Trump, well, then Twan can go to Eva or to Pauw & De Wit. Now that is not an option, because he has exclusively committed to RTL Tonight.”

“Yes, and that means that with big news in your field you may not be visible. Well, for a lot of people that is really something difficult to cope with and that is why I think that a fight might arise there. Then you will get to fight each other behind the scenes and compete.”

Fight between hosts?

Victor thinks that between the four hosts (Beau van Erven Dorens, Humberto Tan, Renze Klamer and Leonie ter Braak) the same thing can happen. “Then you quickly get the question: who can present that important broadcast when there is big news? It noticed that Renze will do the second month during the week and then there are elections.”

He continues: “That means that someone at RTL has thought: yes, Renze is most suitable for the run -up to the elections. Maybe Beau and Humberto agree, but perhaps not, and certainly if the viewing figures are going to fall, yes, then everyone sees themselves as the solution to the problems.”

Wasp’s nest

It will lead to tensions, Victor concludes. “Then Humberto thinks of: yes, we have now used that Renze on that election month, but I could do that much better and the ratings would rise with me, they would have to put me in! You get problems like that.”

“And again, it gets worse if the ratings are not super high, if they are disappointing, but here too there is potential for a fight. It is a wasp nest in potential. It has to be managed very well and I hope for RTL that they will do that well.”
