Bumpy start of the season: Can he help?
Updated on August 21, 2025 – 9:17 p.m.Reading time: 30 min.

Hamburger SV is one of the largest clubs in Germany. In the New sticker on T-Online you will find all the important messages about the “red pants”.
After the bumpy trophy victory against Pirmasens, the HSV is desperately looking for reinforcements-and has his sights on Fabian Rieder. As the “Hamburger Abendblatt” reports, the red pants are interested in the 23-year-old offensive player from Stade Rennes.
The Swiss, who was loaned to Stuttgart last season and won the DFB Cup there, should be open to an HSV change. The problem: Rennes wants to sell the Rieder (contract until 2027) for 15 million euros – hardly financed for the promoted team. It is questionable whether the French get involved in a loan.
Sebastian Schonlau is drawn to the MLS: Hamburger SV confirmed the farewell of his former captain on Thursday afternoon. The 31-year-old signed a contract at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC by 2026 with the option for another year. At the Canadian club, he becomes a teammate of ex-Bavaria star Thomas Müller, who hired there a few weeks ago.
The defensive player had recently no longer played a major role in the Bundesliga promoted from Hamburg and was discontinued as a captain. He is now looking forward to his new task. “The team has done a great job this season, and I am ready to contribute my part to achieve our goals,” said Schonlau.
HSV board member Stefan Kuntz added: “We would like to expressly thank Bascho for his services to the club. He has really done an extraordinary for HSV. He now leaves us through the front door-and this door will always be open to HSV.”
Four days before the Bundesliga start at Borussia Mönchengladbach (August 24, 5.30 p.m./DAZN), a quartet has returned to the HSV training. Trainer Merlin Polzin welcomed Immanuel Pherai, Bakery Jatta, Yussuf Poulsen and Jean-Luc Dompé on the square on Wednesday. All four professionals completed parts of the team training.
