Thomas Müller has further trophies in view of the Vancouver Whitecaps. “I played for so many years in Bavaria in Europe, but it was time for an adventure. But an adventure is only exciting if you can play for titles,” said the well-placed 35-year-old at his first press conference in Canada. “There is a chance not only this, but also next year.”

Müller was warmly welcomed in his new adopted home. “I am very grateful for this. I know that I have triggered a little hype. We want to benefit from this as long as possible,” said the 2014 world champion. Müller is supposed to train with the team from the west coast metropolis for the first time on Friday. In the night from Sunday to Monday against Houston Dynamo FC, those responsible for the club expect German sports director Axel Schuster with Müller’s debut in the Major League Soccer.

“I am very happy to get this chance. I want to be on the field as soon as possible, so I’m here,” emphasized Müller: “I hope that I will get in very quickly. I don’t know how many days it will take, but I am fit and want to give everything.” He also thinks he will “find friends quickly” because he is an open type.

Müller: far too early for the end of the career

Müller received a contract with the Whitecaps by the end of the year with an option for another season, then as a designated player outside the salary limit. His expired contract at Bayern Munich had not been extended, after a total of 25 years he left the German record champion as a record player. After a long time to think and the club World Cup as a farewell tournament at the Munich, he chose North America and against the end of a career. “My body still feels too fit to just stop. I am very motivated and just glad to be here,” stated Müller, for whom his many successes do not play a major role in evaluating the new task: “It’s not about titles in the past, it is about winning titles in the future.”

But not only the chances of the title, but also the World Cup next year played a role in its decision. “Next year the World Cup will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Vancouver is a venue. I hope that we can make the whole world look step by step for Vancouver and perceive the city as a football city.”
