Mats Rosenkranz only wanted to refresh himself for a short heat. But when the tennis professional came back to the court, he had lost the match.
Curious ends in the round of 16 of the ATP Challenger from Hersonissos in Greece: The German tennis professional Mats Rosenkranz was disqualified at 7: 5 after the first set against Pietro Fellin-because he had briefly showered during the break.
At temperatures of over 35 degrees, the 26-year-old left the place after winning the set to set up “ten seconds”, as he later said. When he came back, the chief referee, in consultation with the chair referee, explained the match for. The reason: showering during a game is prohibited according to ATP rules.
“I didn’t know that I couldn’t take a shower,” said Rosary on the pitch. He did not know the rule and emphasized that the referee had not informed him of this beforehand.
The set of rules only allows toilet or clothing change breaks during an encounter- and only during set breaks. The following applies: a toilet or clothing change break with two winning sets and two breaks with three winning sets. The second may only be taken after the third sentence.
The duration is limited: a maximum of three minutes for the toilet, a maximum of five minutes for a change of clothes in combination with a toilet walk. Other purposes, such as showers, are expressly prohibited-also for reasons of anti-doping controls.
Rosary is not the first professional to whom this mishap happens. As early as 2022, the American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran had to accept a disqualification for the same reason.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Kei Nishikori left the place in the match for bronze against Rafael Nadal and only returned after twelve minutes. According to the then Spanish Davis Cup captain Conchita Martínez, Nishikori showered during this time. This was not officially confirmed – other reports speak of a longer route to the toilet.
