As an outsider, Rot-Weiss Essen goes to the cup game against Borussia Dortmund. For coach Uwe Koschinat, it is not just the sporting success.

The Los Borussia Dortmund in the first round of the DFB Cup is either a lot happiness or lot. This depends on which club the BVB is drawn as an opponent. For the players of small amateur clubs, a game is usually fulfilled with a game against Dortmund. That’s going to be lucky. Many ambitious third division, on the other hand, sometimes wants a easier opponent. The BVB would be the lot.

Rot-white food is such an ambitious third division. For coach Uwe Koschinat, Borussia Dortmund is still a desired one: “Simply because the fan camps of both clubs have a very healthy relationship with each other. This is unusual for two clubs from the pot. In this respect, I think both fan camps are very desire for this game. WDR interview.

Minute for silence for Frank Mill

How closely both clubs are connected will also be shown before the game. Then there will be a minute’s silence for the recently deceased Frank Mill, who was active for both BVB and RWE. “This connects again because you can tell that in the pot, of course, there were also a lot of players who were not only played for a club, but have also become absolute legends in different clubs,” said Koschinat.

The 53-year-old has been RWE trainer since mid-December last year. At that time the club was on a relegation zone in the 3rd division. Under Koschinat, Essen then scored a whopping 39 points in the second half of the season and ended the season to eighth place. In the second round table, Essen took second place behind promoted Arminia Bielefeld.

Koschinat: “Can only win”

Koschinat RWE also led to the Lower Rhine Cup in the DFB Cup. In the semi-finals and finals, RWE cleared two heavy chunks with Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and MSV Duisburg. “You will also realize how important these state cup competitions are. They are usually the preliminary stage for such a big going. And that’s why I find the Los Borussia Dortmund just fantastic. We can only win in this game.”

On paper, of course, RWE goes into play as a clear outsider. In the league, the euphoria of the past second half of the season has evaporated a little. At the start, the Esseners played 1-1 twice 1-1 against 1860 Munich and TSV Havelse and each gave a 1-0 lead out of their hands. In Havelse, the equalization in added time fell by falling back.

“It was a clear setback, you have to say honestly. I also hit that,” admitted Koschinat. “We have to accuse ourselves that we have played out a too small number of clear possibilities, despite 70 percent possession of the ball. But that also shows that you can still successfully design football games with very little ball.

Result for Koschinat secondary

Every Essener will dream of the great sensation against BVB, Koschinat knows. “Now, I think, this is not so much my job, but the team to prepare for this game in terms of sport,” he says.

The result is even secondary for Koschinat. The performance of his team is more important for him. “You have to say honestly, as a rule one thing is very much related to the other. But of course it does not happen too often that even an outstanding performance of us does not have to be enough to win this game on Monday evening.”

Nevertheless, Koschinat appreciates his team strongly enough to deliver a tough fight to BVB. “But we really have to come to our maximum in all areas. In the end, a lot has to go together.”

Koschinat expects known BVB

In the best case, the Borussia does not catch its best day. After the club World Cup in the USA, BVB only had a very short preparation for the new season. An advantage for Koschinat: “I believe that my colleague Nico Kovac was very dependent on building many existing things in this short time. There will hardly be a new addition to the starting eleven. There is a totally solid system that allows me to develop a very clear plan, at least from the enemy preparation.”

Regardless of the result, Koschinat hopes that the game of his team, but also the environment there will be a push for the rest of the season. When RWE was still at a relegation rank at the end of last year, the mood in the area was correspondingly bad.

“The team was seen very critically, sometimes not even criticized, but rather tuned, very skeptically accompanied. And that was completely turned in the course of the second half of the season. This has now been noticed in the preparation that something has grown together,” Koschinat looked back.

Koschinat: “Team feels force of the harbor road”

This feeling should be hardened by a passionate appearance against BVB, the 53-year-old said. “So the fans feel that we want to support this team because they deserve it because they represent the red and white colors super. Conversely, the team feels the harbor road and the force that our fans can actually develop. This can be a real factor for the season.”

This message wants to convey Koschinat on the outside on Monday: “If you see all over Germany, Essen is an association that is real that is going to be coming in all areas, then that would be a successful day, regardless of the result. If we can convey to people on the screen that may not be busy with red and white meals every day, that is an association who really wants to fight back, then I think we have achieved a lot.”
