The municipality therefore dives into its own database to review the figures from the past period. First research and on that basis determine follow -up steps, that seems to the mayor the logical order.
On the suggestions made on social media, such as extra cameras and more enforcement, the mayor does not want to anticipate. “If something has to be done, it must be done carefully, based on facts and in consultation with parties such as Sedna (welfare organization), Angelslo Academy (youth organization) and the police.” They are the eyes and ears in the neighborhood, says Van Oosterhout.
The mayor will talk to the police about the current investigation next week.
The mistreatment of the boy leads to various reactions among councilors. Dennis Dekker (Wakker Emmen) calls the incident ‘poignant’ and speaks of a problem that threatens to become ‘almost structurally’. “We have to seriously ask ourselves whether there are enough local police officers and boas. What measures are needed to reverse this?”
Dekker is looking for the collaboration with Kadir Arslan from Jongerenstichting Catch, who wants to re -work for young people in Angelslo. “The Angelslo Academy is valuable, but does not reach the group we are worried about. Those young people do not adhere to office hours; Catch is able to find out the front door and involve parents.”
Joey Koops from D66 calls the abuse a serious incident, but at the same time argues for reluctance when drawing conclusions based on incidents. “We have to make policies on facts, not on excesses.”
According to him, the reactions on social media show that many residents do not feel heard, and that reports are often experienced as meaningless. That really has to change, he thinks. Koops does emphasize that politics must remain careful. “If we are going to run because of a Facebook message, then we do not do justice to our residents, including the victim. He also wants this to be tackled fairly and thoroughly.”
Patrick de Jonge (VVD) calls the abuse very serious after the Golden Arrow and sees it as a confirmation of what has been raising his party for some time: the sense of safety in Emmen is under pressure. “Not only in Angelslo, but in the entire municipality we notice that people feel increasingly unsafe.”
According to De Jonge, the incident is not on its own; He previously asked questions about earlier shooting and stab incidents in Angelslo. He argues for concrete measures and thinks of the use of extra boas or more camera surveillance in risky places. “These kinds of messages, no matter how balls it is, confirm what we have been insisting on for a long time: safety is in the compression. After the summer we will certainly ask attention for this again.”
