Coach Oliver Glasner has gotten one better in the most successful year in club history with Crystal Palace. After the first win of the FA Cup, the former Frankfurter and Wolfsburg coach also won the English Supercup, the Community Shield, against master and favorite FC Liverpool. After it was 2-2 after 90 minutes, it went straight to the penalty shootout. The South Londoners had slightly better nerves and hit three times, while three reds professionals missed. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson held the attempts by Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Already in the cup final against MAN City (1-0) in mid -May the goalkeeper in the 911 duel against Omar Marmoush had become a hero.
It actually looked good for Liverpool: the Hugo Ekitiké, who had changed from the Bundesliga to Angard Road – after interaction with Florian Wirtz – in the 4. Minute and Jeremie Frimpong in the 21st, the Reds brought the lead. The former Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 17th minute with a penalty and Ismaïla Sarr in the 77th equal to the Glasner team.
In the show run of the former Bundesliga players-in addition to the mentioned, Daichi Kamada, Maxence Lacroix and Borna Sosa for Crystal Palace as well as Ibrahima Konaté, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo for Liverpool were also no winner after 90 minutes. An extension was not planned and the nerves kept the nerves in the penalty shootout. The Frenchman, Sarr and Justin Devenenny met only Sosa and Eberechi eze. Meanwhile, Superstar Mohamed Salah, world champion Mac Allister and the U21 European champion Elliott, which was courted by RB Leipzig, failed at Liverpool. Cody Gakpo and Szoboszlai’s goals were not enough.
Before the kick-off, the fans and players thought with a minute’s silence to the Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who had died during the summer break in a car accident. The tragic incident had caused deep dismay in Liverpool.
