In a dramatic penalty shootout, England prevailed against Spain in the European Championship final. Now the English goalkeeper confessed a common trick.
In the European Championship final, the English goalkeeper Hannah Hampton swung up to the penalty heroine-and did not shy away from an uncollective action. Almost two weeks after the 3-1 victory of the English in Basel in Basel, the 24-year-old admitted that she had thrown the drinking bottle of Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Cath for the English fans. According to Hampton, the notes to the English shooters were on the bottle.
“The Spanish goalkeeper had her on her bottle. So I thought to myself: When she goes into the goal, I just take her and throw her to the English fans so that she doesn’t have her,” said Hampton at Talksport with a grin.
Since she had hidden her notes on security in the jersey sleeves, there were no notes on her drinking bottle, explained Hampton. But her bottle had “the same sponsors and so, so I put mine there, thrown their fans and she had an empty bottle.” The Spanish keeper was so confused that she “had to try not to let go loudly,” said Hampton.
Despite the campaign, Coll was able to fend off two English penalty from Beth Mead and Leah Williamson. However, Hampton held the attempts by Mariona Caldentey and Aitana Bonmatí, and Salma Paralluelo also shot past the goal. England secured the title. Hampton, who is under contract with Chelsea FC and played her first European Championship in Switzerland, was eleven of the tournament.
