Netflix launches three new mobile games

Netflix completes its burgeoning collection of mobile games with the arrival of three new titles. With video games, the streaming platform is seeking to diversify as it encounters ever-increasing competition in its historic sector.

Three new titles on iOS and Android

Netflix released its first five mobile games in November 2021. Two of them are directly inspired by one of the platform’s biggest hits, the Stranger Things series. The other three are called Shooting Hoops, Blast Card and Teether Up.

Now, three games complete the company’s offer on iOS and Android. The first, This is a True Story, is an RPG developed by Frosty Pop and produced in collaboration with the NGO Charity: Water, whose objective is to bring drinking water to the inhabitants of developing countries. This is a True Story tells the story of a woman in sub-Saharan Africa and her struggle to find water for her family. Netflix explains that the game is based on true stories, Charity: Water having collected many testimonials from people who have experienced this situation.

The second game now available is a remake of Shatter, a breakout title previously released on PlayStation 3. It’s enhanced with new music and levels, and features global leaderboards for competitive players. Finally, the last game, which should be released soon, is called Into the Dead 2: Unleashed. Originally launched in 2017, it is described as a “runner/shooter hybrid” whose objective is to shoot the undead. It will feature a variety of environments and challenges for players, as well as unlockable weapons, reports GamesBeat.

As with other games on the service, they will be accessible via its Netflix credentials.

Netflix diversifies to no longer rely solely on streaming

By getting into video games, Netflix is seeking to diversify as the streaming sector sees more and more major players emerging like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max. Already last summer, the firm announced that it wanted to launch its own video game platform, and decided to focus, to begin with, on mobile games.

In September 2021, Netflix acquired Night School, known in particular for its narrative games. More recently, the Next Games studio was acquired by the SVOD platform. This one specializes in free-to-play mobile games, some of which are already linked to popular franchises on Netflix like Stranger Things or The Walking Dead.

As a reminder, although Netflix remains number 1 in global streaming, the service has been losing speed in recent months and is increasingly struggling to obtain new subscribers.
