The search for the biathlon icon Laura Dahlmeier, who had an accident in the Pakistani Karakorum Mountains, has been stopped for the time being.
This was confirmed by a spokesman for the tourism authority on site of the “German Press Agency” in the evening (local time). The reason is the fallen darkness, the search will continue next morning.
Laura Dahlmeier was met on Monday on a mountain tour of rockfall. “So far, nobody has been able to penetrate her because of an ongoing big stone chill. At the helicopter surge, it was found that the experienced climber is at least seriously injured. Signs of life were not recognizable,” said her management via Instagram.
Dahlmeier was on the mountain Laila Peak with a rope partner around noon local time at around 5700 meters in the alpine style, “when she was hit by Steinschlag,” it said. “The rope partner immediately set an emergency call, the rescue operation was initiated immediately. Due to the seclusion of the area, a rescue helicopter was only able to reach the accident site on the morning of July 29th. An international mountain rescue team is currently coordinating the salvage. You are supported by experienced international climbers: inside that are in the region.”
“Further information on the accident is provided as soon as there are secure knowledge,” said Dahlmeier Management.

Reinhold Messner from Dahlmeier-Hunglück “shocked”

With regard to the rescue opportunities, the expert was optimistic. The prerequisite: the helicopter must be able to fly and pull the crashed and rescuer up with a rope and remove it. “This is a possibility because the position is not too far from the center in Pakistan, i.e. Islamabad.”
