From July 31 to August 3, the final 2025 will increase in Dresden. At the fifth edition of the multi -sports event, more than 130 German championship titles are awarded in 20 sports.

Archery in front of the Semperoper, athletics in the Heinz-Steyer Stadium or rowing at the Alberthafen-at the 2025 finals in Dresden, a wide variety of disciplines in front of historical scenes are combined into a large multi-sports event. More than 3,400 athletes are expected.

The 2019 finals took place in Berlin for the first time. In 2020, the event had to be canceled due to the Corona pandemic. Last year there were no finals because of the Summer Olympics in Paris and the short-term postponement of the European Athletics Championship in Rome. The event will take place in Hanover in the coming year, 2027 in Stuttgart.

What sports are there?

As with the past editions, traditional sports and trend sports will meet at the 2025 finals. The bandwidth is wide. There are competitions, for example, in athletics, fencing, in gymnastics or rowing. Spectators can also watch Breaking, 3×3 basketball or flag football. Lacrosse, 7-series rugby, flag football, Coastal Rowing (game water rowing) and fistball are new to the program.

Where do the finals take place?

In Dresden, the competitions rise in nine different places that are located within a 3.5 kilometer radius around the city center. The competitions not only take place in traditional sports facilities such as the Heinz-Steyer Stadium (athletics), but are also partly integrated into the cityscape.

Archery is held, for example, in front of the Semperoper, breaking and climbing in front of the Dresden Frauenkirche. At the Alberthafen, the rudders compete and rudder, fencing and badminton takes place in the ball sports. Canoe and stand-up paddling can follow the spectators in HafenCity.

How can I follow the finals?

Interested parties can visit many competitions such as archery, canoe, triathlon or 3×3 basketball for free. Tickets you need, for example, for athletics, gymnastics, fencing or badminton. If you are not on site, you can follow the finals in detail on television. ARD and ZDF broadcast more than 30 hours live in the main programs on the four competition days. There will be another around 100 hours of live sport on four additional live stream channels per day.

What stars are there?

In athletics alone, fans can look forward to many big names. In addition to the Olympic champions Yemisi Ogunleye (shot put) and Malaika Mihambo (long jump), Germany’s top sprinter Gina Lückenkemper and the German record holder over 100 meters, Owen, was also expected. There are also a triple jump Max Hess and local hero Karl Bebendorf (obstacle run).

In canal racing, three-time Olympic champion Tom Liebscher-Lucz is aiming for his 20th German championship title in his hometown. How important are the finals for the athletes?

This is sometimes very different between the different sports. In the case of athletes, the national title fights are an important station on the way to the World Cup in Tokyo in September. The same also applies to the gymnasts, archers, canoe racing athletes and rowers who can demonstrate their shape before the World Championships in late summer and autumn. For the German fencers, for example, the finals are likely to be a not so large indicator, since this year there are no more big championships on the program.

The finals are an opportunity for the state of Saxony.
